The ALGAE & SEAGRASS RESEARCH GROUP at Murdoch University carries out research on a wide range of basic and applied topics relating to phytoplankton, seaweeds and seagrasses. They range from the commercial production carotenoids by the large-scale culture of microalgae such as Dunaliella salina and Haematococcus pluvialis and algae for the production of lipids for biodiesel, to the ecology of seagrass beds, coral reefs and temperate intertidal habitats, seaweed taxonomy, sponge-algae symbioses, phytoplankton dynamics off the WA coast, toxic dinoflagellates and the restoration of seagrass beds.

The lab also has an extensive culture collection of microalgae, a wide range of algae culture facilities up to pilot-scale, and provides a phytoplankton, toxic algae and seaweed identification service, the contract culture of microalgae and advice on algae bloom management.
